Operations in Rwanda Start Up

Another great candidate has been identified as our loan officer. Ndugu Uwumugisha brings significant experience to our efforts in Rwanda, especially since he formerly worked at an MFI. He is currently an asset manager for the United Nations Int'l Court of Tribunal. His skill set for this volunteer assignment is ideal.

Even more encouraging were his conditions for accepting the assignment. First, he wants this to be a long term commitment from GSM. Next, if we are going to do it, the process must be right and legal. Finally, he wants to target the poorest of the poor, those who have no other access to capital. How encouraging.

The second point may be the most difficult. Rwanda has strict laws and requirements for a Micro-finance organization to operate here. The laws are intended to preclude abuse and corruption. Therefore, our initial start-up may take a little longer and be more challenging than in other countries. Once we are up and running though, I have high confidence that the team here will be successful and many people will ultimately be helped.
